Buy a Peerage12.02.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 13th Aug 2007
On Friday I commented on how I would like to see an elected House of Lords or at least a democratic second chamber in the United Kingdom however today I writing about how people could buy peerages or at least virtual peerages. The Elect the Lords campaign is selling virtual peerages as way to raise funds. The virtual peerage you buy off Elect the Lords campaign will not allow you to vote in the House of Lords, get you any extra land but for your donation to the Elect the Lords campaign you will receive an certificate of inauthenticity and your full title will be listed on the Elect the Lords campaign website as a mark of the Elect the Lords campaigns gratitude. Your money will not be spent on election materials in a few key seats for any political party but will be used to campaign for a democratic second chamber. For more information visit the Buy a Virtual Peerage page on the elect the lords campaign website. If you make a large enough donation to get you a Marquesset or a Duchy the Elect the Lords campaign will even design a Coat of Arms. Other then being able to become a virtual Marquess (£300) or purchasing a virtual Duchy (£1000) you can also become a virtual Baron/Baroness for a merely £10, becoming a virtual Viscount or virtual Viscountess will only cost you £30 and Virtual Earldoms are available for a £100.
