Help clean up royal finances!12.02.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 13th Jun 2007 The finances of the royal family have long been the subject of debate. A number of parliamentary supporters of Republic have tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) in Parliament calling for the accounts of the Duchy of Cornwall to be made clearer and more transparent, as demanded by Parliament's Public Accounts Committee in 2005. To help Republic's campaign please ask your own MP to put their name to this motion. You can visit www.republic.org.uk/edm which will allow you to email your MP directly and ask them to show their support. The text of the motion reads: EDM 1503: Duchy of Cornwall Accounts That this House notes that, in the financial year 2005-06, the Duchy of Cornwall employed 102 people and had a revenue surplus of £14.1 million and a capital value of £561.2 million; further notes that the Duchy of Cornwall is not required presently to meet the disclosure requirements set out for public sector organisations and companies; further notes that the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), in its 19th report of the 2004-05 Session of Parliament, called upon it to make their accounts `clearer and more transparent'; further notes that, despite repeated pressure from the campaign group Republic, this recommendation of the PAC has not been implemented; and calls on the Duchy of Cornwall to take steps to make its accounts more transparent, as recommended by the PAC.
