On Saturday Caroline Cheyne, Colin Ross, Shaheena and I went to Cannon Hill Park in Birmingham for Taste of Birmingham 2009.
Taste of Birmingham was a good chance to try some dishes from around the West Midlands, try some local produce and Caroline and Colin also tried some drinks. While we were at Taste of Birmingham there were also some live cooking demonstrations and a cocktails demonstration.
Shaheena tried the Filo Masala Prawns from itihaas which were described as prawns in a light pastry encased in a spicy Ino-Chinese fusion batter, served with a moist garnish of spring onions tossed in green chillies, garlic and soy sauce and then she had the Jumbo Prawn Chingli Chaap from Asha's which was prawns marinated in ginger, garlic and lemon, breaded then deep fried.
I tried itihaas's Paapri Chaat which was discs of pastry topped with chick peas, onions and potatoes with chaat masala and paprika, garnished with coriander and accompanied by sweet yoghurt and tamarind chutney along with Keralan Fish Stew with Idli from Lasan this was fish with traditional vegetables stewed in coconut milk scented with curry leaves, served with Idli (steamed rice cake). Finally Shaheena and I tried some ice cream from Farmer Gosden's Ice Cream.
Shaheena was very impressed by the Filo Masala Prawns and happy with the Jumbo Prawn Chingli Chaap. I was happy with the Paapri Chaat but disappointed with the Keralan Fish Stew with Idli. Both of us enjoyed our ice cream though.
Although I was disappointed at the lack of halal or vegetarian options at the event I think I will be going back since I enjoyed having a look at what was on offer.
