Comparison between U.S. states and countries nominal GDP

I found this entry titled Comparison between U.S. states and countries nominal GDP on Wikipedia which is based on figures from the International Monetary Fund list on List of countries by GDP (nominal) for world GDP and the List of U.S. states by GDP (nominal) figures.

On this list the European Union is ranked higher then the United States of America which should be no surprise given that the European Union includes five of ten highest ranked countries as its members. The highest ranked U.S. state on this list is California which is in seventh.

I was surprised to find China was ranked lower then Germany, that Spain, Italy, Canada were ranked so high and that Brazil, Russia and India were not ranked higher. I was also surprised to find Texas was ranked higher then New York.

Take a look at the list and see if it makes you question your perceptions of countries economies.
