Ricky Gervais: Where did it all go wrong?

September 26, 2007 12:02 AM

The article Ricky Gervais: Where did it all go wrong? Which appeared on the Independent website in late august questions whether Ricky Gervais is funny and relevant.

To me Ciar Byrne seems to suggest that Ricky Gervais's close to the bone comedy, expensive show tickets and ego & smugness are making him unpopular however I think that Ricky Gervais's close to the bone comedy and his ego & smugness are what make his comedy great.

When I went to see Ricky Gervais in Birmingham the price of the tickets was a lot lower then what the audiences in Edinburgh paid however Ricky Gervais's performance that night along with the performance of the warm up comic made sure I enjoyed myself and thought my £25 were well spent.

I get the impression that the point of the Edinburgh People's Festival is to give new acts or less well known acts a chance to showcase their talents to audiences. If that is the case then it was probably wrong of Ricky Gervais or the people behind his tour to have a gig in Edinburgh during the festival however the fact that he sold out seems to suggest that audiences had no problem with him being there or the prices they were charged for their tickets in which case people should just shut up and let Ricky Gervais get on with his stuff.

People also criticise Ricky Gervais every time he decides to do the dance from The Office but what his critics don't realise is that's what most people like about him the fact that even with his ego & smugness he has no problem making a fool of himself.

Tim Arthur the comedy editor for Time Out makes some interesting comments towards the end of this article, which I tend to agree with.
